However, while Alastair Cook’s men were relying on a last-wicket stand between Matt Prior and Monty Panesar at Eden Park to earn a 0-0 series result against the Kiwis, Australia were being soundly beaten 4-0 by India, resulting in the Ashes odds moving further in England’s favour.

England are now 2/9 to retain the treasured urn this coming July and August, and also odds-on to win the series outright, as they have done the past two times the sides have locked horns.

The last time Australia were on English soil in 2009, Andrew Strauss led England to a 2-1 victory. A repeat of that score for Cook & Co. is available at 6/1 in our Ashes betting markets.

Previous Ashes series have been famous for the bullish 5-0 predictions in the build-up, most notably by Glenn McGrath ahead of the 2005 series which saw England regain the urn for the first time since 1987. A 5-0 win for Australia would seem unlikely given the 150/1 odds attached to that score, with England the more likely to complete the whitewash at 20/1.
